The symphonic poem Les Djinns (“the genies”) for piano and orchestra was composed by César Franck in 1884. It was inspired by a poem with the same title from Victor Hugo’s collection of poems Les Orientales (1829). Both the composition and the poem have strongly evocative imagery, rich colour, and a passionate intensity in the way the tale is told. They also share the same form: crescendo (“becoming louder”) followed by diminuendo (“becoming quieter”). Although both works were written in the 19th century, Les Djinns is strikingly modern, with a sensibility we can relate to today. So is the story told by Les Djinns just a surreal fairy tale, or does it merge with our reality?

Die symphonische Dichtung „Les Djinns“ („Die Geisterwesen“) für Klavier und Orchester hat César Franck im Jahre 1884 komponiert. Das gleichnamige Gedicht von Victor Hugo aus dem Zyklus „Les Orientales“ (1829) inspirierte ihn dazu. Sowohl die Vertonung als auch das Gedicht zeichnen sich nicht nur durch stimmungsvolle Bilder, ihren Farbenreichtum, ihre Energie und leidenschaftliche Erzählweise aus, sondern ähneln sich ebenso in der Form ihres Aufbaus: crescendo („lauter werdend“) und diminuendo („leiser werdend“). Obwohl „Die Djinns“ im 19. Jahrhundert entstanden sind, wirken sie äußerst modern und kommen unserem heutigen Lebensgefühl nahe. Ist diese Geschichte also nur ein surreales Märchen oder verschmilzt sie mit unserer Realität?
